the Ayurvedic turmeric-and-pepper restorative of the Indian household
Origin: Gangetic Plain, India
From the journey of Turmeric.
Haldi doodh has been prescribed in Ayurvedic medicine for at least two thousand years as a remedy for colds, fevers, joint inflammation, and post-exertion fatigue. The formulation with black pepper is not incidental: piperine, the active compound in black pepper, increases the bioavailability of curcumin by approximately 2,000 per cent, meaning that the Ayurvedic physician understood the biochemistry of this pairing long before modern pharmacology confirmed it. The Western 'Golden Milk' trend of the 2010s was in essence a commercial rediscovery of what Indian households had prepared every evening for generations.
