Classic creamy blended banana drink
Origin: Global (popularised in the United States, c. 1930s–1960s)
From the journey of Banana.
The smoothie as a concept emerged from the blender culture of mid-20th century America, but the banana smoothie has older roots, traditional Latin American and Caribbean banana drinks (batidos de guineo, batida de banana) long predated the electric blender, made by vigorously mashing ripe bananas with milk, water, and sugar by hand. With the widespread adoption of electric blenders in American homes through the 1950s and 1960s, and the health food movement of the 1970s that positioned the banana as an ideal source of potassium and energy, the banana smoothie became one of the most consumed blended drinks in the world. Today it spans every culture and context: from the nutrient-dense fitness smoothie of gyms and health cafés to the simple blended banana-milk drink that is a daily breakfast staple in millions of households across Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and beyond. The banana smoothie represents the final, global phase of the banana's journey, from ancient jungle fruit in Papua New Guinea, to colonial trade commodity, to the single most recognisable and most versatile fruit on Earth.
The banana smoothie is endlessly customisable. Classic additions include: a spoonful of peanut butter (for protein and richness), a handful of spinach (which disappears in flavour behind the banana), a pinch of cinnamon, or frozen mango. The recipe above is the foundational, unadulterated version: creamy, naturally sweet, and ready in under five minutes. Smoothies are best consumed immediately; banana smoothies oxidise and turn grey within an hour.
